Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, has announced that the Annual National Assessment (ANA) examinations due to take place from September 10 to13 will be used by the department to assess learner literacy and numeracy abilities at foundation, intermediate and senior phases.
Makgoe said the department expects a 60 percent pass rate from the 408 0941 learners who will sit for the examinationsand is committed to reward every school that obtains 100 percent with a hall.
“The department has provided the schools with the 2013 ANA time table, 2012 ANA report, 2013 diagnostic analysis report, 2013 assessment guidelines for teachers to be able to plan for the administration of ANA, and 2013 Exemplars for teachers to prepare learners for the administration of ANA.
“Literacy is important to learners as it ensures their ability to read for knowledge, write logically and communicate well while numeracy enables kids to reason with numbers and mathematics concepts. All parents will be informed of their children’s performance and given reports of the assessment,” said Makgoe.
The ANA will not be used for learner promotion to the next grade, but to verify that every pupil is developing the languages and mathematics skills appropriate for the grades then intervene where necessary. The department will release the ANA results in December 2013.
The MEC has called on parents to support the learners from grade one to six and those in grade ninethat will be taking part in the ANA.
Makgoe said parents should get involved in their children’s homework by using learner workbooks and getting ANA exemplar question papers and discussing possible answers with them.
