By Keletso Mosime
Free State Department of Education MEC, Dr Tate Makgoe, launched the Magnificent Wednesdays School Sports League at the Kaizer Sebothelo stadium, in Botshabelo on Tuesday, 03 March.
The League will be played in all 5 districts of the province, starting from circuit level to municipalities, where winners will advance to district level and later progress to compete in the provincial finals that will be played in September.
There are 3 different sporting codes, which are Football, Netball and Softball consisting of a total of 5 533 learners coming from 1 165 schools in the province.
This initiative seeks to eliminate social ills that hinder teaching and learning in schools and communities, tackling issues such as school violence and substance abuse.
“Learners who participate in sports are fitter, healthier and more confident, which will result in better life choices” says Free State Education MEC, Dr Tate Makgoe.
Through the League, learners’ talent will be identified to further expose them to possible sporting career paths.
Sports also encourages learners to practice mutual respect, discipline and teamwork.
