The Free State Department of Education will participate in the annual World GIS Day for the first time, on the 16th November 2022.
What is GIS?
GIS (Geographical Information System) is a computer system that can collect, capture, store, analyse and display spatial data. Spatial Data is data that can be visualized in 2 ways, either as vector data (points, lines and polygons) or raster data (grids or pixels).
The benefits of GIS include improved communication, efficiency as well as better management and decision making.
GIS Day provides an international forum for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. This is a fun day to showcase how GIS is used, discover, and explore the benefits of GIS, and inspire the Department of Education by celebrating GIS.
GIS Day is not just an event, it’s a global movement. It brings universities, government agencies, schools, non-profits, and GIS professionals together to build knowledge of GIS in their communities, and create understanding about the world we live in.
