Officials from the examinations and assessment directorate at head office and districts, gathered in numbers for the three-day lekgotla program, held from 6 – 8 March 2024.

The programme started with the director for examinations and assessment, Tebogo Kenneth Basjan, officially welcoming the officials.

Thereafter, the officials started with team-building activities in which they had to work together in groups, to build that oneness and collaboration among each other and get ready to start day two of the pulsa full program, bright and early with fresh minds.

The second of the programme was packed full of presentations, but also to set the tone for the day as well as the outline the objectives thereof, which were to conduct irregularity-free examinations and assessment,

compliance with national standards and state of readiness, enhancement of school-based assessment (SBA) quality of grades 4 – 12; improving examinations and assessments, alignment; institutionalization of the general education certificate (GEC) in the examinations and assessment structure and systems as well as the enhancement of registration, systems, and certification processes.

“ Additionally, the lekgotla is looking to institutionalize the GEC. The department has been piloting the writing of the GEC in Grade 9 and this year is the last year for piloting. 250 schools across the five districts will participate in the last pilot and next year will be the full implementation of the GEC. After writing the Grade 9 examination, learners receive a certificate, that will give them different pathways of studying, such as moving the academic route to Grade 10 or to a technical vocational education and training college (TVET), said Basjan”.

Following the presentations, delegates were grouped and moved forward to commissions they were allocated in. In those commissions, they were tasked with devising strategies that will assist with bettering the directorate when it comes to aspects of administering examinations in the province as well as maintaining the position of the department regarding the Grade 12 results. The discussions in those commissions were directly aligned with the objectives.

Subsequent to the breakaway sessions and coming up with strategies, the individual representatives from the groups had to present their discussions and resolutions would emanate from those discussions as well as declaration of the lekgotla. The lekgotla was also graced by the presence of the Chief Director for examinations and assessment from Northern Cape Education Department, Portia Phuzi, who was sharing good practices on her presentation.
