Free State Maths Competition grows by leaps and bonds.

 

Mathematics Competition was hosted from 11 – 12 October at Gonyane Primary School for grade 8- 11 learners in quintiles 1- 5 in Bloemfontein, Free State.

The competition is a partnership between Eskom Development Foundation and Kagiso Trust.

Since its inception in 2017 and now in its eighth year, minus 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, about 5556628 learners participated drawn across the province.

The objective which is being surely realised and achieved over the years is encouraging more learners to take the subject and follow maths related careers. Some of the previous winners are now studying medicine at the University of Free State like, Tsholofelo Kobue who encouraged all learners to well and get good results and be admitted.

The top three winners from each grade 8-11, were honoured with prizes, with first -place recipient receiving a gold medal, certificate, tablet, R 1000 voucher, laptop and a printer.

The overall winner from Grey College Alam Tamin got an additional roving trophy, R 2000 voucher, laptop, and printer. He is confident that he will again be the overall winner again next year.

Eskom Development Foundation project manager, Justice Thobejane said the milestone still to be achieved is to include learners living with disability to participate in the competition.

Kagiso Trust Head of Education Development Sizakele Mphatsoe said the participants are not just finalists but are the ambassadors of the mathematics competition and made the province proud.
