Trompsburg Primary and Wongalethu Secondary Schools in Xhariep District received infrastructure facilities that were officially opened by Premier of the Free State, Honourable MJ. Letsoha-Mathae and MEC for Education, Dr. MJ Maboya on 19 September 2025.
This gathering marked the celebration of the official opening of these infrastructure projects.
The facilties unveiled at Trompsburg Primary School comprise of a nutrition centre and classroom blocks with the project value at R12 354 552.93.
Wongalethu Comprehensive School received a nutrition centre, classroom blocks, ablution facilities valued at R15 574196,57 and automotive and construction workshops as well as Engineering Graphic Design (EGD) technical classrooms with the project value at R21 345 052, 83.
The provision of the various infrastructure facilities at both these schools was unveiled to address the concern of overcrowding in classrooms. To ensure that learners start classes in the morning having a had a meal, and to restore dignity to learners by having proper working toilets.
The delegation including the premier, mec, mayors, local councilors and officials of the Department of Education led by the schools’ principals, took them to the identified facilities where they unveiled the plaques, toured the facilities and learners conducted demonstrations in the technical classrooms and construction workshops.
Beauty Tamtam, a Grade 10 learner at Wongalethu Comprehensive School, recited a poem which spoke of the jubilation that the learners were feeling regarding the facilities they were provided. She spoke of the beauty of the workshop and the technical classrooms and how they will be benefiting from them.
MEC Maboya in her remarks before introducing the Premier, emphasized on the purpose of this gathering by saying “inadequate classrooms, lack of nutrition facilities and the absence of technical training spaces undermine the learning outcomes and limit pathways into skills and employment.”
Premier Letsoha-Mathae, in her keynote address, pronounced that “this is the time to renew, build, inspire and act.” She spoke of the Free State continuing to lead in quality education, that will assist in alleviating poverty. She praised the work done by contractors for building these facilities and remarked on the quality work done. She emphasized that teaching cannot happen in leaking roofs and substandard buildings and made a commitment that the provincial government will always ensure that learners in the Free State are prioritized.
