2026 Gender Based Violence Youth Empowerment Camp
About 200 Grade 9 and 10 learners gathered for 3 days at Trio Secondary School in Kroonstad for a Youth Empowerment Camp to promote GBV awareness.
These girls and boys were equipped with knowledge, skills and strategies to be able to identify, avoid and overcome GBV issues.
The learners were drawn from schools where where a need was identified; to offer psychosocial support in order to assist learners from communities with GBV prevalence, those showing signs of trauma, aggression, withdrawal and risky behaviour, those directly and indirectly affected by GBV at home. Learners who are also influential, those who can be able to shift peer culture back to school and learners who are able to speak up were identified in order to capacitated and to ensure they positively influence their peers.
“We are here to confront the realities of GBV, to explore the theme of identity and respect for one another. Through dialogue and different activities, we will unearth different identities; and the skills that you will learn today will assist you in being able to identify right from wrong. This camp is not only about learning, but being the change you want to see” Mr. Lehentse Seekoei, Chief Education Specialist.
