As part of their Corporate Social Responsibility, ABSA donated school shoes to 150 identified learners at Legae Commercial Secondary School in Bloemfontein.
MEC Maboya has always called on the private sector to invest and plough back because education is a societal matter. All hands must be on deck to ensure Free State learners receive the best education possible. An investment in a learner is an investment for the future.
“We just want to say thank you to the Department of Education and ABSA, on behalf of the learners and staff from Legae. Learners from this school are economically and socially challenged and this donation goes a long way” said the school principal, Mary Lepheane.
Legae Commercial Secondary School, located in one of the oldest townships in Bloemfontein, has been previously plagued by social ills but the learners are showing determination to succeed. The Grade 12 learners are moving full steam ahead for the final examinations.
“We are gathered here today not merely to hand over school shoes. We are gathered to affirm a principle that lies at the heart of our Constitution and at the heart of our democracy: that every child matters, every child deserves dignity, and every child deserves an equal opportunity to learn, to develop and to succeed.
However, we must also acknowledge an important truth. The right to education is not realized merely because a school building exists. It is not realised simply because a learner is enrolled in a classroom. Rights become meaningful when the barriers that prevent people from exercising them are removed. This is why today’s initiative matters, said MEC Maboya while addressing the audience.
