A brief profile of Dr Mamiki Julia Maboya
Dr Mamiki Julia Maboya was born and bred in Tumahole, Parys in the Free State. She was married to the late Mr Paseka Simon Maboya. She is a mother of three and a grandmother to five beautiful grandchildren.
Dr Maboya’s career commenced in 1981 where she started as a mathematics teacher at Lekgulo High School in Qwaqwa. She later became the Head of Department for Maths and Science at Thalabodiba High School in Qwaqwa and subsequently appointed as a maths lecturer at Bonamelo College of Education. She served as a subject advisor for mathematics in the now Fezile Dabi Education District, supporting other educators in delivering quality mathematics education.
Throughout her career, she has demonstrated an extraordinary ability to drive strategy and to deliver innovative and agile solutions. Whilst Chief Director in the Free State Department of Education, she led a dedicated team that saw the Free State almost permanently claiming a top spot in the national matric league table. She served as a Deputy Director General (DDG) in the Department of Basic Education where she championed the development and implementation of a number of transformative school curriculum policies in South Africa. Dr Maboya completed her Masters Degree in Mathematics Education through the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom (UK). She reached a significant milestone in her life when she qualified as the first black female with a Doctoral Degree (PhD) in Mathematics Education from the University of the Free State. She is an experienced and dynamic leader in public service with a career spanning over 40 years. Her impeccable track record as a senior administrator demonstrates her strong capabilities and uncompromising work ethic.
She served and continues to serve on various government, professional and political structures including;
• Umalusi Quality Council as a member
• Member of the Institute of Directors South Africa (IoDSA);
• Member of the Education and Health subcommittee of the ANC PEC;
• She is a currently an NEC member of the ANCWL and the Chairperson of its Economic Transformation Committee. She has presented several papers on the state of education in the Republic of South Africa nationally and internationally.
• Dr Maboya co-authored a number of academic articles on various Mathematics Education topics published in national and international journals. She was appointed the MEC of Education in the Free State in 2024.
